Book II: On the Creation of Things · Distinction 1

Textus Latinus
p. 38

COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM I.

Pars II. De multitudine, fine et distinctione creaturarum.

Et quia non valet etc. — Textum Magistri vide supra pag. 12.

DIVISIO TEXTUS.

Supra egit Magister de conditione rerum a parte principii, hic agit a parte finis.

Circa primum quaeruntur duo.

COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION I.

Part II. On the multitude, the end, and the distinction of creatures.

And since it is of no avail etc. — For the text of the Master see above, p. 12.

DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above the Master treated of the condition of things on the side of their principle; here he treats on the side of their end. And since things receive the distinction of their forms from their end and according to that respect, this part therefore has three little parts. In the first1 he shows the distinction of things from the comparison of things to their end.

p. 39

In the second, however, according to that distinction he assigns a diverse comparison to the end, there: Therefore, if it be asked, why man was created2 etc. In the third he briefly epilogizes what has been determined, making from these for himself a way to the rest of the things to be determined in what follows, there: From what has been set down it appears. — The first and the last part remaining undivided, the middle is divided into three. In the first he determines the end of intellectual substance; in the second the end of substance purely corporeal, there: And just as man was made on account of God etc.; in the third he determines the end of the composite of both, insofar as it is such, there: Concerning man also in Scripture etc. And there he first determines the truth; secondly he dissolves a difficulty, there: It is also wont to be asked, since of the greater etc.

TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of this part, in which there is treatment of things produced in comparison to their end, according to order and distinction, three things principally are asked.

The first is concerning the distinction of things.

The second concerning order.

The third concerning the difference of the Angel and the soul.

Concerning the first, two things are asked.

The first is concerning the multiplication of things with respect to their principle.

The second with respect to the differences according to which they are distinguished.
