## COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM XXIV.

PARS I.

Prima pars duas habet. Prima pars dividitur in duas.

Tertio, utrum in susceptione coronae fiat abrenuntiatio temporalium.

Quarto, utrum Ecclesia talibus teneatur ad temporale subsidium.

## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XXIV.

PART I.

On the Sacrament of order, as regards the things which dispose toward it.

Now let us approach the consideration of sacred ordination, etc.

DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

This is the sixth part, in which he treats of the sixth Sacrament1. It could, however, be divided over against the whole preceding [part]. For in the preceding [parts] he treated of the Sacraments which regard a determinate person. Here he treats of those things which regard the multitude of the Church, and first concerning order, secondly concerning matrimony2. In whatever way the aforesaid part be divided and ordered, this [part], in which he treats of the Sacrament of order, has two [parts]. For in the first he determines concerning the Sacrament itself. In the second, concerning the dispensation of this Sacrament3, at4: It is wont to be asked whether heretics cut off from the Church etc.

The first part has two [parts]. In the first it determines concerning the things which dispose toward order, namely a good life and the tonsure. In the second, concerning the orders themselves, at: Doorkeepers are the same as porters. The first part is divided into two. In the first it shows that, since there are seven orders — namely for the signifying of sevenfold grace — no one worthily receives orders who is not in grace; and this is the interior disposition. In the second it determines concerning the exterior disposition, which indeed is the tonsure, at: In this Sacrament, therefore, the sevenfold etc.

TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of this part inquiry is made concerning order in general, concerning which — according to the two things which are determined in the text5 — two questions are principally asked.

First it is asked concerning the seal of order.

Secondly it is asked concerning the Sacrament of order.

And since the seal of order is the tonsure or crown, concerning this four things are asked.

First it is asked whether those to be ordained ought to be crowned or tonsured.

Secondly, granted that they ought, it is asked whether that crown is a Sacrament.

Thirdly, whether in the reception of the crown there is made a renunciation of temporal things.

Fourthly, whether the Church is bound toward temporal support for such persons.
