Dist. 9, Divisio Textus
Book IV: On the Sacraments · Distinction 9
## COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM IX.
Prima pars habet tres partes secundum tria capitula. In prima parte Magister dicit veritatem. In secunda manifestat mentientes, ibi: Haec verba et alia huiusmodi. In tertia dissolvit ex his locutiones multiplices, ibi: Secundum hos duos modos sumendi etc.
TRACTATIO QUAESTIONUM.
Circa primum quaeruntur quatuor.
Quarto, utrum Christus manducaverit utroque modo.

## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION IX.
On the Sacrament of the eucharist with respect to those receiving it.
And as there are two realities of that Sacrament, etc.
DIVISION OF THE TEXT.
Above the Master treated of the Sacrament of the eucharist in itself; here he begins to treat of it by comparison to the one who eats. And since concerning the eating of the eucharist error was twofold — both as regards the one who eats and as regards the food which is eaten1 — therefore this part has two parts. In the first the Master excludes the error as regards those who eat, because some said that the wicked do not eat the true body of Christ. In the second he excludes the error as regards the food, because others said that the true body of Christ is received by none, and he does this in the tenth distinction: There are likewise others [who follow] the madness of those preceding, etc.
The first part has three parts according to three chapters. In the first part the Master states the truth. In the second he exposes those who lie, there: These words and others of this kind. In the third he resolves from these the manifold ways of speaking, there: According to these two modes of receiving, etc.
TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.
For the understanding of those things which the Master determines in the present distinction, two matters are principally inquired into.
First, it is asked about eating in general.
Second, in particular, by comparison to the wicked.
Concerning the first, four things are asked.
First, it is asked about the modes of eating which the Master sets down, namely two, the sacramental and the spiritual.
Second, what it is to eat spiritually, or for what reason one is said to eat spiritually.
Third, what it is to eat sacramentally, or for what reason one is said to eat sacramentally.
Fourth, whether Christ ate in both modes.
