Dist. 15, Part 2, Divisio Textus
Book I: On the Mystery of the Trinity · Distinction 15
COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM XV.
Pars II.
Prima pars habet quatuor partes.
Tertio, utrum utraque missio sit secundum eadem dona gratiae augmentata.

COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XV.
Part II.
On the mission of the Son and of the Holy Spirit with regard to its mode, which is twofold — namely, visible and invisible.
Here it is asked whether the Son was sent only once. For the text of this part, see above p. 287.
DIVISION OF THE TEXT.
Above the Master treated of mission with regard to its principle; here he treats of it with regard to its mode, which is twofold — namely, visible and invisible. And since these modes belong to both the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit, the Master first assigns them with respect to the mission of the Son; secondly, with respect to the mission of the Holy Spirit, below at the beginning of the sixteenth distinction: Now we must consider the Holy Spirit, etc.
The first part has four sub-parts. In the first he shows on the authority of Augustine that the Son has been sent in two modes — namely, visibly and invisibly. In the second he assigns a twofold difference between these two modes1, at: Behold, two modes of the mission of the Son have been distinguished. In the third he raises a certain doubt arising from what has been determined, at: Here it is asked why the Father is not said to be sent. In the fourth he removes — that is, teaches how to avoid — an error proceeding from the solution of that doubt, at: Hence certain heretics have supposed. For from his having said that the Father is not sent, one might come to believe that there is no equality in the divine [persons]. Responding to this, the Master says that this is not on account of inequality but on account of the authority of the principle, or its connotation.
THE TREATMENT OF QUESTIONS.
For the understanding of what is said in this part2, three questions are asked concerning the invisible mission of the Son — for the visible will be treated in the third [book]. And because the invisible mission of the Son is similar to the invisible mission of the Holy Spirit, both are asked about together.
First it is asked whether this mission is according to the gifts of grace that makes pleasing [gratum facientis], or of grace freely given [gratis datae].
Second it is asked whether the Son and the Holy Spirit are said to be sent according to the same gifts of grace.
Third, whether each mission is according to the same gifts of grace augmented.
