Dist. 13, Divisio Textus
Book III: On the Incarnation of the Word · Distinction 13
## COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM XIII.
Prima pars in duas dividitur. In quarum prima determinat veritatem.
TRACTATIO QUAESTIONUM.
## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XIII.
On the human nature of Christ, with respect to the fullness of grace and wisdom treated together.
Furthermore it must be known that Christ, as man, etc.
DIVISION OF THE TEXT.
Above the Master treated of the human nature assumed by Christ as to the condition of the nature. But in this part he treats of the same as to the fullness of grace and wisdom. Now this part is divided into two. In the first of these he treats of the fullness of grace and wisdom together. In the second, specifically of the fullness of knowledge, below in the fourteenth distinction: Here it is necessary to inquire, since the soul of Christ etc.
The first part is divided into two. In the first of these he determines the truth. In the second he removes a doubt, that is, he dissolves an objection which seems to run contrary to the truth that has been determined, there: But to this there seems to be an obstacle etc.
The first part can remain undivided on account of its brevity; but the second part can be divided into three parts. In the first of these the Master dissolves and explains an authority of the Gospel, which seems to run contraryp275-1 to the truth predetermined. In the second he raises an objection against his own solution and exposition by an authority of Ambrose, there: Yet elsewhere it is found written etc. In the third and last he determines in what way the aforesaid words of Ambrose can be soundly and piously understood, there: These words of Ambrose, with pious diligence etc. But the subdivisions of the parts can sufficiently be drawn from the textp275-2.
TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.
Now for the understanding of this part there falls in here a question concerning the grace of Christ, since belowp276-1 there will be inquiry concerning his knowledge; and since in what precedes there has been treatment of the grace of union, there remain here two things to be inquired into.
The first is concerning the grace of Christ as a singular person.
The second is concerning the grace according to which he is the head of the Church.
Concerning the first, three things principally are to be inquired into.
The first is, whether the grace of a singular person in Christ is created.
Secondly, granted that it is created, whether it is finite and measured.
Thirdly, granted that it is finite, it is asked whether it is full grace.
