## Commentarius in Distinctionem XXXIV. ### De habitibus donorum.
Pars I.
In quarum prima determinat veritatem.
Prima pars dividitur in duas partes.
Similiter secunda pars, in qua removet dubitationem, dividitur in duas. In quarum prima opponit. In secunda determinat, ibi: Ad quod dicimus, auctoritatum1 praemissarum etc.
TRACTATIO QUAESTIONUM.
Circa primum quaeruntur tria.
ARTICULUS I.
De comparatione donorum ad virtutes.
## Commentary on Distinction XXXIV. ### On the habits of the gifts.
Part I.
On the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in general.
Now we must treat of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.
DIVISION OF THE TEXT.
In the preceding [distinctions] the Master treated of the habits of the theological virtues and also of the habits of the cardinal virtues. In this part he intends to determine concerning the habits of the gifts. Now this part is divided into three parts. In the first of these he determines concerning the gifts in their generality. In the second he determines specifically concerning the gift of fear, there: And since the occasion now presents itself to us for treating of fear. In the third he briefly assigns the difference among the remaining gifts, there: After these matters it must be diligently considered etc., in the thirty-fifth distinction.
The first part pertains to the present lecture and is divided into two parts. In the first of these the Master sets down, as it were, a preface to this part, showing what and how many things he wishes to determine. In the second he carries it out, there: That these gifts are virtues etc. And that second part is divided into two parts. In the first of these he determines the truth [of the matter]. In the second he removes a doubt, there: But to this there seems to be an objection in what Beda [says] concerning fear etc.
The first part is divided into two parts. In the first of these he determines concerning the gifts in comparison to the habit of virtue, showing that the gifts are virtues, there: That these gifts are virtues etc. In the second he determines concerning the same in comparison to Christ, there: But that these same [gifts] were in Christ etc.
Likewise the second part, in which he removes the doubt, is divided into two. In the first of these he raises the objection. In the second he determines [the matter], there: To which we say, of the authorities1 cited above etc.
TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.
For the understanding of this part there falls here a question concerning the gifts in general, and concerning these two things can principally be asked.
The first is concerning the comparison of the gifts to the virtues.
The second is concerning the gifts in themselves.
Concerning the first, three things are asked.
For first it is asked concerning the comparison of the gifts to the virtues as to their difference.
Secondly it is asked concerning the same as to their order.
Thirdly it is asked concerning the same as to their pre-eminence.
ARTICLE I.
