## COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM XXXIV. ### Pars II.

De dono timoris specialiter.

Et quia de timore occurrit nobis tractandi locus etc.

TEXTUM MAGISTRI VIDE SUPRA PAG. 732.

DIVISIO TEXTUS.

Supra egit Magister de donis in generali, in hac vero parte agit de dono timoris in speciali. Dividitur autem ista pars in partes tres. In quarum prima Magister assignat diversos modos timendi. In secunda vero inquirit diversitatem1 illorum modorum, ibi: De his eisdem timoribus latius etc. In tertia vero quaerit, secundum quam istarum differentiarum timor in Christo fuerit, ibi: Illud quoque diligenter notandum est etc.

Prima pars dividitur in duas. In quarum prima ponit distinctionem timorum secundum quatuor differentias.

Tertia vero pars principalis dividi habet in partes duas. In quarum prima ostendit, quod in Christo fuit timor reverentiae4. In secunda vero inquirit, qualiter in Christo fuerit timor poenae, ibi: Cum autem in Christo fuerit timor poenae etc.

TRACTATIO QUAESTIONUM.

Circa primum quaeruntur tria.

Primum est de timore servili per comparationem ad suum principium.

Secundum est de timore servili per comparationem ad suum usum.

Tertium est de eodem timore per comparationem ad gratiae complementum.

ARTICULUS I.

## COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XXXIV. ### Part II.

On the gift of fear, specifically.

And since the occasion for treating of fear here presents itself to us, etc.

FOR THE TEXT OF THE MASTER SEE ABOVE, PAGE 732.

DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above, the Master treated of the gifts in general; but in this part he treats of the gift of fear specifically. Now this part is divided into three parts. In the first of these the Master assigns the diverse modes of fearing. In the second he inquires into the diversity1 of those modes, there: Concerning these same kinds of fear more fully, etc. In the third he asks, according to which of these differences fear was in Christ, there: That too must be diligently noted, etc.

The first part is divided into two. In the first of these he posits the distinction of the kinds of fear according to four differences. In the second he reduces those four to two, there: And note that here four kinds of fear are distinguished, etc.

But the second principal part, in which he inquires into the difference between the members previously assigned, is divided into four parts. In the first of these he assigns the difference between servile fear and chaste fear2. In the second he introduces a certain authority which seems to be contrary to what precedes, and determines its sense, there: But there is also another opinion, which seems to be contrary to this. In the third, for the greater evidence of these matters, he adds examples, there: You cannot explain it better3 etc. In the fourth and last he adds the exposition of a certain other authority, so as to have full evidence concerning the foregoing, there: It must nevertheless be known that each fear, etc.

The third principal part is to be divided into two parts. In the first of these he shows that in Christ there was the fear of reverence4. In the second he inquires how in Christ there was the fear of punishment, there: But since in Christ there was the fear of punishment, etc.

TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

Now for the understanding of this part, in which the gift of fear is treated, a question here arises concerning two things.

For, first, inquiry is made concerning unformed or servile fear, which is with sin.

Second, inquiry is made concerning gratuitous fear, which is given with the Holy Spirit.

Concerning the first, three things are asked.

The first is about servile fear in relation to its principle.

The second is about servile fear in relation to its use.

The third is about the same fear in relation to the completion of grace.

ARTICLE I.

On unformed or servile fear.

Apparatus Criticus
  1. Cod. F differentiam.
Codex F reads differentiam ("difference") [for diversitatem].
  2. Edd. addunt tangens interdum de initiali.
The editions add touching also at times on initial [fear].
  3. Fere omnes codd., discedentes a textu Magistri, Non potest melius explanari. Mox pro expositionem cod. A explanationem.
Almost all the codices, departing from the text of the Master, read It cannot be explained better. Shortly after, for expositionem ("exposition") codex A reads explanationem ("explanation").
  4. In Vat. desunt verba fuit timor... in Christo fuerit.
In the Vatican edition the words there was the fear... was in Christ are lacking.
