## Commentarius in Distinctionem X ### Pars II.

TEXTUM MAGISTRI VIDE SUPRA PAG. 215.

Divisio textus.

In secunda manifestando veritatem convincit errorem, ibi: Haec et his similia obiiciunt etc. In tertia concludit veritatem iam probatam, ibi: Ex his aliisque constat etc.

Circa primum quaeruntur quatuor.

## Commentary on Distinction X ### Part II.

The truth of faith, that the body of Christ is truly on the altar, is confirmed.

Sufficient answer has been made to the heretics and their objections, etc.

FOR THE TEXT OF THE MASTER SEE ABOVE, PAGE 215.

Division of the text.

Above, the Master refuted the error of those who hold that the body of Christ is not truly on the altar, and this by responding to their sophistical objections; in this part he confirms the truth of faith, showing by manifold authority that the body of Christ is truly on the altar, and showing at the same time by what power it is there. And this part has three parts. In the first he takes up again the error set down above together with its reasoning, in order to break it down by the demonstration of the truth. In the second, by making the truth manifest, he refutes the error, there: These and the like they object, etc. In the third he concludes the truth now proved, there: From these and other things it is established, etc.

With the first part and the last remaining undivided, the middle is divided into two. In the first he shows by a twofold authority that the body of Christ truly can be on the altar. In the second he shows that it not only can be, but indeed truly is after the consecration, there: Likewise, before the blessing another species is named. And both authorities have reasons joined to them. For the first two say that the power of the Word, which was able to create1, and the power of the Holy Spirit, which was able in the womb of the Virgin wondrously and beyond the order of nature to form the body of Christ, can likewise—indeed much more strongly—change substances into that which already was. Likewise the two following say that the bread is converted into the true body2, and that the body is there where the bread was. This is done by the secret power and might of the Holy Spirit.

Treatment of the questions.

For the understanding of this part two things are principally inquired.

First it is asked about the Sacrament of the Eucharist in comparison to the transubstantiating power.

Second, in comparison to the apprehending power.

Concerning the first, four things are asked.

First it is asked about the power of transubstantiating in comparison to the power of creating.

Second, in comparison to the power of conceiving.

Third, in comparison to the word.

Fourth, in comparison to the element.

Article I.

On the Eucharist with respect to the power of transubstantiating.
