COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XIV.
Part I.
On penance in general.
After these things penance must be treated.
DIVISION OF THE TEXT.
Having concluded the three principal parts in which the Master treated of the three Sacraments, here begins the fourth part, in which he treats of the Sacrament of penance. Now this part is divided into two. In the first part he treats of penance in general. In the second he treats specially of its parts, below in the sixteenth distinction: But in the perfection of penance three things are to be observed.
The first part has two [parts]. In the first the Master determines the truth. In the second he refutes two errors concerning penance, below in the same distinction, there: By these words certain men more vehemently etc.
The first part has three parts. In the first he determines its order to baptism. In the second part he determines its multiplicity, there: Baptism is only a Sacrament, but penance etc. In the third, after the distinction of the multiplicity, he sets down the notifications of penance-the-virtue, there: Penance is so called from punishing, by which one punishes things unlawful etc., where he sets down the account from the side of the name and from the side of the thing.
TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.
For the understanding of this part inquiry is made concerning penance-the-virtue, and concerning this two [things] are principally asked.
First, inquiry is made concerning it absolutely.
Second, in comparison.
Concerning the first, three [things] are asked.
First it is asked, whether penance is a virtue.
Second, granted that it is, it is asked, whether it is a general virtue, or a special one.
Third it is asked, whether it is a theological virtue, or a cardinal one.
ARTICLE I.
On the virtue of penance absolutely.
QUESTION I.
Whether penance is a virtue.
