## Commentarius in Distinctionem XIV ### Pars II.
Contra errorem, quod poenitentia non iteratur.

Supra egit Magister de poenitentia in generali, determinans veritatem, scilicet quid sit et quomodo dividatur et ad Sacramenta alia ordinetur. In hac parte ostendit duos errores ex praedictis ortum habentes. Quorum unus est, quod poenitentia non iteratur; alius est, quod poenitentia potest fieri de uno peccato sine alio. Ideo dividitur haec pars in duas. In prima elidit primum errorem. In secunda secundum, infra distinctione decima quinta: Et sicut praedictis auctoritatibus illorum errorum etc.
Prima pars habet tres partes. In prima ponit errorem cum confirmatione. In secunda respondet ipsorum rationibus, ibi: His aliisque pluribus utuntur etc. In tertia adducit multiplices auctoritates ad elidendum istum errorem, ibi: Quod vero poenitentia non tantum semel agatur etc.
Prima pars duas habet secundum duo membra erroris. In prima adducit auctoritates, quae ostendunt, quod vera poenitentia non est, a qua quis recidivat. In secunda probat, quod post recidivum non est iteranda, ibi: Item Ambrosius: Reperiuntur qui saepius etc.
Similiter secunda pars duas habet. In prima respondet auctoritatibus, quae videntur ostendere primam partem erroris. In secunda respondet auctoritatibus, quae ostendunt secundam, ibi: Illud autem, quod Ambrosius ait etc.
Similiter tertia pars dividitur in duas. In prima adducit auctoritates ad improbationem illius erroris. In secunda exempla Patrum. Primum facit ibi: Quod vero poenitentia non semel tantum agatur etc. Secundum, ibi: Exemplis etiam astrui potest.

Ad intelligentiam huius partis duo principaliter quaeruntur.
Primo quaeritur de iteratione poenitentiae.
Secundo, de effectu poenitentiae iteratae.
Circa primum quaeruntur tria.
Primo quaeritur, utrum contingat cadere a vera poenitentia.

Against the error that penance is not repeated.

Division of the text.
Above the Master treated of penance in general, determining its truth — namely, what it is and how it is divided and how it is ordered to the other Sacraments. In this part he sets forth two errors arising from the things aforesaid. Of these, the one is that penance is not repeated; the other is that penance can be done for one sin without another. Therefore this part is divided into two. In the first he refutes the first error. In the second the second, below in the fifteenth distinction: And just as by the aforesaid authorities of those errors, etc.
The first part has three parts. In the first he sets out the error with its confirmation. In the second he answers their arguments, there: To these and many other things they make use, etc. In the third he brings forward manifold authorities to refute that error, there: But that penance is not to be done only once, etc.
The first part has two according to the two members of the error. In the first he brings forward authorities which show that there is no true penance from which one falls back again. In the second he proves that after a relapse it is not to be repeated, there: Likewise Ambrose: There are found those who oftentimes, etc.
Likewise the second part has two. In the first he answers the authorities which seem to show the first part of the error. In the second he answers the authorities which show the second, there: But that which Ambrose says, etc.
Likewise the third part is divided into two. In the first he brings forward authorities to disprove that error. In the second the examples of the Fathers. The first he makes there: But that penance is not to be done only once, etc. The second, there: It can also be established by examples.
Treatment of the questions.
For the understanding of this part two things are principally inquired.
First it is asked about the repetition of penance.
Second, about the effect of repeated penance.
Concerning the first, three things are asked.
First it is asked whether it happens that one falls away from true penance.
Second, whether it happens that one rises again through penance.
Third, whether everyone doing penance over a fault finds pardon from God.
