## Commentarius in Distinctionem XV ### Pars II.

Alias quoque auctoritates inducunt etc.

TEXTUM MAGISTRI VIDE SUPRA PAG. 346.

Divisio textus.

In secunda vero ponit veras responsiones, ibi: His responderi potest etc.

Nam in prima ponit duas rationes. In secunda ponit duas responsiones ad praedictas rationes. In tertia primo ponit aliorum responsionem, deinde improbat. In quarta primo confirmat veritatem per auctoritates, secundo epilogat. Partes autem cuilibet inspicienti patent.

Tractatio quaestionum.

Circa primum quaeruntur quatuor.

Primo quaeritur, quid sit satisfactio.

Secundo, cui sit satisfaciendum.

Tertio, per qualia opera.

Quarto, per quae.

Articulus I.

De modo satisfaciendi in generali.

## Commentary on Distinction XV ### Part II.

A reply is made to the reasons for the aforesaid error, drawn from the authorities of the Saints.

They also adduce other authorities, etc.

FOR THE TEXT OF THE MASTER SEE ABOVE, PAGE 346.

Division of the text.

Above the Master replied to the reason drawn from sacred Scripture. In this part he replies to the reasons drawn from the authorities of the Saints and the custom of the Church. Now this part has four [subdivisions]. In the first he sets down the reasons which seem to make for the defense of this error. In the second he sets down the true replies, there: To these it can be replied etc. In the third he disproves the false, and however probable1 reply, there: Yet to some it seems that satisfaction etc. In the fourth, toward the confirmation of the truth and the refutation of the error, he adduces authorities proving that penance cannot be done for one sin if one remains in another, there: I think this is enough of a reply for them.

Now each of the parts could be subdivided into two parts. For in the first he sets down two reasons. In the second he sets down two replies to the aforesaid reasons. In the third he first sets down the reply of others, then disproves it. In the fourth he first confirms the truth through authorities, second he sums up. The parts are evident to anyone who inspects them.

Treatment of the questions.

For the understanding of this part, since above2 it was inquired about the power of making satisfaction, here it is inquired about the manner. And concerning this two things are principally inquired.

First it is asked about the manner in general.

Second it is asked about the manner in particular.

Concerning the first, four things are asked.

First it is asked what satisfaction is.

Second, to whom satisfaction is to be made.

Third, by what sort of works.

Fourth, by what means.

Article I.

On the manner of making satisfaction in general.
