COMMENTARIUS IN DISTINCTIONEM XVI.

Pars I.

DIVISIO TEXTUS.

Prima pars habet tres.

ARTICULUS I.

De contritione quantum ad quidditatem.

QUAESTIO I.

Quid sit contritio quoad suam substantiam.

COMMENTARY ON DISTINCTION XVI.

Part I.

On the integral parts of the Sacrament of penance.

Now in the perfection of penance three things are to be observed, etc.

DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above the Master treated of penance in its generality. In this part he treats of its parts. And since the principal part of penance, as it is a Sacrament of the Church, is confession; therefore he first assigns the parts of penance. Second he treats principally and specially of confession, and of the things which pertain to it, below in the seventeenth distinction: Here a manifold question arises, etc.

The first part has two [members] according to the two kinds of parts: for some are integral parts, some subjective. Therefore he first treats of the integral ones, of which perfect penance consists. Second of the subjective ones1, there: To the foregoing it must be added, that penance is carried out in three ways.

The first part has three [members]. In the first he assigns those parts of which penance is integrated, confirming [them] by the authority of Chrysostom and Augustine. In the second he hands down the manner according to which they constitute2 true penance, there: Therefore discretion is necessary for the penitent. In the third he determines the manner in which they make not true penance, but false, there: And as they are worthy fruits of penance, etc.

p. 383

TREATMENT OF THE QUESTIONS.

For the understanding of this part inquiry is made concerning contrition; and concerning this four things are principally asked.

First it is asked concerning contrition with respect to its quiddity.

Second, with respect to its quantity.

Third, with respect to its duration.

Fourth, with respect to its intensity.

With respect to the first, two things are asked.

First it is asked concerning contrition, what it is with respect to its substance.

Second, what it is in the genus of morals.

ARTICLE I.

On contrition with respect to its quiddity.

QUESTION I.

What contrition is with respect to its substance.

Apparatus Criticus
  1. 1
Or concerning those which, as inferior, are contained under penance; cf. below part II, dubium I.
  2. 2
Non pauci codd. constituit, incongrue, ut videtur; hinc edd. legunt secundum quem vera poenitentia constituitur.
Not a few codices [read] constituit, incongruously, as it seems; hence the editions read according to which true penance is constituted.
