DIVISIO TEXTUS.

Supra ostendit1 Magister, quid significetur per terminum numeralem, cum dicimus, tres personas; hic secundo subdit, quid significetur per hunc terminum persona. Et dividitur haec pars in duas. In prima quaerit et opponit; in secunda solvit, ibi: Quibusdam videtur, quod nomine personae.

Prima pars habet tres partes. In prima movet dubitationem; in secunda opponit per auctoritatem Augustini ostendens, quod dicitur secundum substantiam, ibi: Persona enim, ut supra ait Augustinus; tertio opponit per rationem, tertio capitulo2 ibi: Aliter etiam potest ostendi, quod nomine personae: ubi monstrat illud idem.

DIVISION OF THE TEXT.

Above the Master showed1 what is signified by a numeral term, when we say three persons; here, secondly, he adds what is signified by this term person. And this part is divided into two. In the first he inquires and raises objections; in the second he resolves, there: To certain ones it seems, that by the name of person.

The first part has three parts. In the first he raises a doubt; in the second he objects by the authority of Augustine, showing that it is said according to substance, there: For person, as Augustine says above; thirdly he objects by reason, in the third chapter2 there: It can also otherwise be shown, that by the name of person: where he shows the same thing.

To certain ones it seems, that by the name of person. This is the second part, in which he resolves; and this part is divided into two. In the first he resolves according to the opinion of others, who say that person is taken according to essence, yet related to a supposit. In the second he resolves according to his own opinion by a distinction, there: It must therefore be known, that this name person makes a manifold understanding. And this part is divided into two. In the first part he shows how this name person is taken in the plural; in the second, how it is taken in the singular, when it is said: the Father is one, the Son another, in person3, there: Now let us look, whether according to the same account. — The first part has three parts. First it is asked concerning the quiddity of this name person.

    The Vatican edition, against the codices and edition 1, reads respondet ("responds"), and a little below dicitur ("it is said") in place of dicimus ("we say"). Then after hic ("here"), which indeed is wanting in not a few codices and in edition 1, it omits secundo ("secondly"), which in nearly all codices and in edition 1 stands.
  2. Vat. omittit tertio capitulo, quae voces in multis codd. ut I P T V etc. habentur, aliis codd. ut A Q S V X Z loco earum exhibentibus quarto capitulo; in nostra editione Magistri est capitulo primo.
    The Vatican edition omits tertio capitulo ("in the third chapter"), which words are found in many codices such as I, P, T, V, etc., other codices such as A, Q, S, V, X, Z exhibiting in their place quarto capitulo ("in the fourth chapter"); in our edition of the Master it is capitulo primo ("in the first chapter").

    The words in persona ("in person"), suppressed by the Vatican edition, we have restored on the authority of very many manuscripts, such as A, B, D, F, G, H, K, P, Q, T, Y, Z, etc., and of edition 1.
