Divisio textus.

Supra determinavit Magister statum damnatorum post iudicium quantum ad rationem et voluntatem. Hic incidenter determinat statum ante iudicium, maxime quantum ad cognitionem. Et dividitur haec pars in tres. In prima determinat, qualiter cognitio reprobarum animarum se habeat ad nos. In secunda vero, qualiter se habeat ad Beatos, ibi: Quaeri etiam solet, utrum vicissim etc. In tertia quaerit, qualiter se habeant Beati ad reprobos, ibi: Postremo quaeritur, an visa poena reproborum etc.

Ultima pars habet duas partes. In prima ostendit, quod non minuetur gloria bonorum ex aspectu poenae damnatorum¹. In secunda exprimit poenas, quas videbunt, scilicet vermem et ignem, ibi: Non est autem mirandum, si Sancti etc.; ubi concludit sermonem epilogando breviter quae in hoc libro determinata sunt et etiam in omnibus praecedentibus.

Primo quaeritur de cognitione eius per comparationem ad virtutem cognoscentem.

Part II.

On the state of the damned before the judgement, especially as regards cognition.

Furthermore it is customarily asked, whether of the reprobate etc.

Division of the text.

Above, the Master determined the state of the damned after the judgement as regards the reason and the will. Here he incidentally determines their state before the judgement, especially as regards cognition. And this part is divided into three. In the first he determines how the cognition of the reprobate souls stands in relation to us. In the second, however, how it stands in relation to the Blessed, there: It is also customarily asked, whether conversely etc. In the third he asks how the Blessed stand in relation to the reprobate, there: Lastly it is asked, whether, the punishment of the reprobate having been seen etc.

The last part has two parts. In the first he shows that the glory of the good will not be diminished by the sight of the punishment of the damned¹. In the second he sets forth the punishments which they will see, namely the worm and the fire, there: Nor is it to be wondered at, if the Saints etc.; where he concludes his discourse by briefly summing up what has been determined in this book and also in all the preceding ones.

Treatment of the questions.

For the understanding of this part two things are asked principally.

First it is asked concerning the cognition of the separated soul.

Second, concerning the worm.

Concerning the first, three things are asked.

First it is asked concerning its cognition by comparison to the knowing power.

Second, by comparison to the state of wayfarers.

Third, by comparison to the state of the Blessed.
